Indeed, the Chaîne des Puys-faille de Limagne has recently obtained its inscription on the UNESCO world heritage list, which it has been waiting for a few years now. It is during the 42nd session, in Manama, capital of Bahrain, that UNESCO gave its verdict on 2 July 2018. The Puy de Dôme had been waiting five years for this decision, since the project was launched in 2013. Five long years which now allow the Puy de Dôme to appear to the world as an exceptional geological site, full of history. It should also be pointed out that it is the first natural property to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in mainland France!
In order to achieve this, the department redoubled, and even tripled its efforts, since this was the third time it had submitted the candidature. This time, it was the territorial stakes of the candidacy that made the difference towards the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and UNESCO. It must be said that this candidacy "mobilized local authorities, businesses, associations and inhabitants around the recognition and preservation of this exceptional natural heritage. The dossier was drawn up by the Puy-de-Dôme Departmental Council through a close partnership with local academics for the scientific component and the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne for the management. [...] This international recognition is part of more than 40 years of actions for the protection and management of this site. It is now up to us to preserve, enhance and bring this universal heritage to life. It must serve as a basis for sustainable development, successfully combining protection of the landscape and geological features, support for traditional activities and responsible tourism". Thanks to this distinction, the Chaîne des Puys-faille de la Limagne will gain worldwide fame and attractiveness, a sign of recognition of all the efforts of the region and the department in the protection and preservation of this magnificent natural site.
